Description

The reserve lies between Ponte Mammolo, on the Via Tiburtina, and Ponte Nomentano, on the Via Nomentana, and is characterised by the meanders of the Aniene river until it flows into the Tiber. The landscape features flatlands interspersed with oak copses, consisting of common oaks, Turkey oaks and pubescent oaks, and wet areas with elms, white willows, ashes and maples. Other areas contain small tufa-stone crags with traces of ancient Roman quarries. The animals found in the park are the porcupine, greyheron, the kingfisher and cormorant, while the water courses are a home to river crayfish and crabs, as evidence of unpolluted waters. The many archaeological sites include the two Roman villas of Via Tilli and of Ripa Mammea, and the Pleistocene deposit of Rebibbia-Casal de’ Pazzi, where excavations have brought to light the remains of large prehistoric animals, and especially elephants. Another important site is the Cervelletta complex: a large fortified structure built on a tufa spur and composed of a medieval tower of the 13th century that forms the centre piece to various other residential and farm buildings, constructed between the 16th and 17th century. The whole area also features medieval watchtowers for controlling the river and farmsteads.
