S. MARIA DEL SUFFRAGIO In the early 1600s the Confraternita delSuffragio, whose goal was that of offering suffrage prayers for the defuncts’souls, decided to build a church in honour of Santa Maria del Suffragio on ViaGiulia. The construction works, based on a project by Carlo Rainaldi, began in1616 with the construction of the Casa, the oratory, and the church, whichterminated with the building of the church’s façade in 1669. The facade presents two orders and it iscrowned by a big triangular tympanum. In the lower order three portals open up.On top of this, among Ionian pilaster strips, a big triangular window opens up. The interior embodies a single nave with sidechapels and it is roofed by a barrel vault. On the altar, in the middle of thepresbytery, one finds a painting by Giuseppe Ghezzi portraying the “Anime delpurgatorio” (1672). The apse’s vault is frescoed with the “Gloria dellaVergine” by G. B. Benaschi.
