Description

S. MARIA D’ITRIA OD  ODIGITRIA Its building dates back to 1594, when ClementeVIII allowed the Sicilian community that resided in Rome to build a church anda boarding school for the youngsters that would come to study. The name SantaMaria Odigitria derives from the fact that a painting of the Vergine Odigitria, coming from Costantinople, was once inside the church. The entire complex wasalmost fully destroyed from the French in the late 1800s and then rebuilt bythe Sicilian community on the basis of a project by F. Manno in 1814. The very simple facade dates back to the late 1800sand embodies two orders. In the lower one there is a portal surmounted by adedicatory inscription; in the upper one we find an arched window. The interior, which was restored in 1970,embodies a unique nave with an apse.
