Description
In 1638 the church was reconstructed by the Portuguese people, who commissioned the work to Martino Longhi the young. In 1674 the work was taken over by Carlo Rainaldi, who finally realized the dome. The facade of the church by Martino Longhi (1636-38), is divided into two parts. In the lower part there are three portals: the central one has a triangular gable on top with a marble winged angel, surrounded by festoons. The upper side is dominated by a large window and the symbol of the old Portuguese Braganza family, who helped financing the church. The facade has also two figures of sitting angels. The interior is rich in polychrome marbles, and presents a Latin cross plan. On the sides are six chapels with sculptures and paintings among which there is a depiction of the Madonna and S. Anthony, by Antoniazzo Romano (1435-1509).
