The façade of the church, which corresponds to the colonnade of the former temple of Antoninus and Faustina, can be seen externally when visiting the archaeological area of the Roman Forum.
Description
The church is situated inside the Roman Forum. In 141 the emperor Antonio Pio ordered the construction of a temple in honourof his wife Faustina. A cell of the temple was later transformed into a churchbetween C.VII and VIII. In 1430, it was given to the Universita’ degliSpeziali, which still holds jurisdiction over it. The denomination Miranda isusually attributed to all the marvels that surround the Roman Forum. The churchwas entirely restored between 1601 and 1614 by Orazio Torriani. Only ten columns are left over from the ancienttemple, forming a porch infront of the church’s entrance. The entrance, made ofbrick, is divided into two parts. The lower part has an entry portal withlateral Ionian columns. The interior, bearing a single nave, has threechapels on each side. On the major altar one finds “ Martirio di San Lorenzo” (1646), a painting by Pietro daCortona, while in the first chapel on the left there is “Madonna con Bambino eSanti” by Domenichino.
