Information

Entrance to State museums, monuments, galleries and archaeological sites is free for all EU citizens under the age of 18. Visitors who are under 12 years old must be accompanied.
Free admission to State Archives and Libraries for all citizens (regardless of age).

Description

Free admission
directly at the ticket offices of the exhibition venues, on presentation of a document certifying one of the following conditions:
- non-EU minors (Rome, 28 May 2013)
- European Union citizens under 18 years of age;
- Italian citizens residing abroad, upon presentation of a suitable document certifying their enrolment in the Register of Italians Resident Abroad (AIRE), within the limits of the Fund specifically established by the MIC;
- to disabled persons and a member of their family or another accompanying person who can prove that they are members of social and health care services
- to citizens of non-EU countries on a "condition of reciprocity" (children under 12 must be accompanied)
- to tourist guides of the European Union in the exercise of their professional activity, by showing a valid licence issued by the competent authority;
- European Union tourist interpreters when working alongside the guide, on presentation of a valid licence issued by the competent authority;
- Ministry staff;
- members of the I.C.O.M. (International Council of Museums);
- groups or groups of students from public and public schools in the European Union, accompanied by their teachers, subject to prior booking and to the quota established by the head of the institution;
- students attending advanced training courses at the Ministry's Schools (Central Institute for Restoration, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, School for the Restoration of Mosaics);
- to teachers and students enrolled in Fine Arts Academies or corresponding institutes of the European Union, by showing their certificate of enrolment for the current academic year;
- teachers and students on degree courses, specialised degree courses, post-graduate studies and research doctorates in the following faculties: architecture, conservation of the cultural heritage, science of education or literature and philosophy with an archaeological or historical-artistic focus. The same facilities are available to lecturers and students of corresponding faculties or courses established in European Union countries. Free admission is granted to students by showing their certificate of enrolment for the current academic year, and to teachers by showing an appropriate document;
- teachers of art history at secondary schools, by presenting an appropriate document;
- journalists who are up to date with the payment of their membership fees, by presenting a suitable document proving their professional activity (see DDG n.1109 of 7/09/2019 DG-Musei);
- for reasons of study, research attested to by scholastic or university institutions, by academies, by Italian or foreign research and cultural institutes, as well as by organs of the Ministry, or for particular and motivated needs, the Heads of the Institutes may allow free admission to the exhibition venues within their competence and for specific periods to those who request it;
licensed tourist guides from the European Union. (see circular no. 20/2016 DG-Museums)
- Italian school teaching staff with tenure or a fixed-term contract are granted free admission to museums, archaeological areas and parks and to State monumental complexes. The MiBAC has joined the initiative as regards access to spaces where exhibitions or temporary displays are set up with an exhibition route separate from the ordinary tour. Consequently, those entitled will be able to access such spaces on payment, using vouchers, which can be generated through a computer application (cartadeldocente.istruzione.it), active as of 30 November 2016 (see circular no. 77/2016 DG-Musei).

Free admission
by issuing an individual card, of annual duration with photograph requested to the General Directorate of Museums for study and research reasons or for particular and motivated needs:
- to the operators of voluntary associations operating through conventions at the peripheral offices of the Ministry;
- Inspectors and Honorary Conservators of the Ministry;- to the Military of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit;
- members of the I.C.C.R.O.M.;
- Italian and foreign scholars for study or research purposes certified by Italian or foreign scholastic or university institutions, academies, research and cultural institutes, as well as by organs of the Ministry, or for special and motivated needs, the Director General may issue individual persons with annual passes for free admission (DM 239 /2006);

Free admission
by issuing an individual pass, valid for one year, with photograph requested to the General Directorate for Museums for reasons of study and research or for particular and motivated needs:
- to the operators of voluntary associations operating through agreements at the Ministry's peripheral offices;
- Inspectors and Honorary Conservators of the Ministry;
- to the Military of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit;
- members of the I.C.C.R.O.M.;
- Italian and foreign scholars for study or research purposes certified by Italian or foreign scholastic or university institutions, academies, research and cultural institutes, as well as by organs of the Ministry, or for special and motivated needs, the Director General may issue individual persons with annual passes for free admission (DM 239 /2006);

Facilitated admission
- From 28 February 2019, for every day that does not provide free admission to young people aged between 18 and 25, the ticket will cost €2.00. The same concessions apply to citizens of non-EU countries "on condition of reciprocity";

Free Entrance
- Free admission is allowed on the occasion of special events, both national and local, which are announced on the MiC website.
