Description
Opposite the Palazzo dei Conservatori, the Palazzo Nuovo was designed by Michelangelo, identical to the previous one, to complete the square.
In 1603, construction of the last part of Michelangelo's project began, but it was not completed until 1654 under Pope Innocent X Pamphilj. The building was used to collect the ancient statues that could not find a place in the Palazzo dei Conservatori and in 1734, with the purchase of the Albani collection, Clement XII Corsini inaugurated it as a museum.
In the small courtyard is the gigantic reclining statue of Marforio which, together with the more famous Pasquino and other characters, is one of the so-called 'talking statues' of Rome. In the atrium the colossal statue of Mars is remarkable and there are some Egyptian pieces from the area of the Temple of Isis in the Campus Martius.
